When Blick Art Materials prepared to open its newest San Jose location, they wanted the space to reflect the creativity, imagination, and artistic energy that defines the artists and makers who walk through its doors every day.
Maxfield Bala Creative was commissioned to create a series of large-scale custom artworks utilizing their (2 1/2" x 4' x 6') premier wood panels. The pieces were created specifically for the store's expansive interior. Installed high above the sales counters above their custom artistic graffiti spray paint storage racks which help showcase the paint colors and make the selection for the customers easier. As showcased here:
The collection transforms the space into an immersive visual experience that celebrates creativity, craftsmanship, and artistic expression while showcasing what's possible with Blick's products and the supplies they sell. The project features three custom-painted works that blend wildlife, florals, artistic tools, and references to the creative process itself. Together, the pieces create a dynamic visual narrative that feels right at home inside one of the nation's leading fine art supply retailers.
The Artwork in the Space
Installed above Blick's signature spray paint wall, the three large-scale works were designed to be experienced throughout the store rather than from a single viewpoint. Their elevated placement allows visitors to encounter the artwork from multiple angles as they move through the aisles, creating new visual relationships between the pieces and the products below.
Each artwork combines elements of wildlife, florals, creative tools, and the artistic process itself. Spray paint cans, paintbrushes, and artist's hands are woven into compositions featuring bears, big cats, butterflies, birds, and marine life, reflecting both the natural world and the act of creating art.
The vibrant color palette of the paintings complements the expansive spray paint display beneath them, creating a visual connection between the artwork and the materials available to customers. Together, the installation transforms the wall into more than a product display, turning it into a celebration of creativity, craftsmanship, and artistic expression.

Art Inspired by Creativity
Creating artwork for an art store presents a unique opportunity. Unlike a traditional commercial mural, the audience includes professional artists, students, educators, illustrators, designers, and first-time creators. The artwork needed to feel inspiring without prescribing a specific interpretation. Blick understood that creativity can often be diluted through the design-by-committee process that many commercial murals and branded art installations undergo. Instead, they gave Maxfield the creative freedom to fully express his unique artistic style, blending wildlife, botanical elements, fine art techniques, and contemporary mural influences into a cohesive body of work that feels authentic, imaginative, and distinctly original.

The first piece combines a powerful shark portrait with an artist's hand, paintbrush, and vibrant floral elements. The composition explores the relationship between observation and creation, highlighting the way artists transform inspiration from the natural world into something entirely new.
The contrasting use of realism, bold color, and expressive mark-making reflects the creative tools and materials found throughout the store.

The second artwork continues the theme through a collection of powerful wildlife imagery. Jaguars and tigers emerge through layered compositions of color, texture, and botanical elements. The piece was designed to capture both energy and movement while encouraging viewers to discover new details from different perspectives.
Like much of the creative process itself, the artwork reveals more the longer you spend with it.

The final piece features a roaring bear surrounded by florals, butterflies, spray paint imagery, and references to contemporary art-making. The artwork serves as a celebration of creative freedom, experimentation, and self-expression.
Together, the three works create a cohesive collection while maintaining their own individual identities.
Celebrating the Artistic Community
Blick Art Materials has long served artists, students, educators, designers, muralists, and creative professionals. Because of that, this project carried a unique responsibility.
The artwork was designed not only to enhance the physical environment but also to celebrate the community that the store serves. Every visitor entering the space encounters imagery that reflects curiosity, creativity, craftsmanship, and imagination, the same qualities that drive artistic practice.
In many ways, the installation serves as a tribute to the creative people who use the store every day.
Opening Day Turnout
The response on opening day exceeded expectations, with a line of customers stretching around the block before the doors even opened. Artists, students, educators, and members of the local creative community showed up in force to celebrate the arrival of Blick's newest location.
The excitement continued throughout the day as visitors packed the store, explored the new space, and experienced the artwork as part of their first visit. Seeing the store filled with creative energy reinforced the project's goal of creating artwork that reflects and celebrates the artists who walk through Blick's doors every day.
